Finding that character was an intense struggle for him. Bloom is such a complex character, he has so many layers and contradictions and strange things in his pockets. Finding all that inside himself was such an intense process, and I think ultimately that’s what caused his breakdown.
Another arena in which Mulino was willing to spare no expense was in the casting of the lead roles. Marlon Brando proved an especially controversial choice. "It's true that Bloom's cat makes only a few animal noises, but look at the precision with which Joyce composed them! Who but Brando could hope to express the full force of meaning behind a word like 'Mkgnao'?" Recalls producer Franz Verdoux: "We paid about a million dollars a noise. But throughout the recording session Brando lapped milk from a saucer."
